Well, I can imagine they might love my attitude right now. I imagine they won't love the fact that I am this close to opting out of the whole social network experiment altogether until it's truly open

I think digital sharecropping works better as an analogy than as an actual analytical insight. Basically, Facebook and other social networking apps have a strong incentive to prevent people from leaving by providing them better and better toolsets over time. That obviously doesn't happen in agriculture.

People have left social networks before and they will do so again if there is an alternative that suits them better. It's ludicrous to think that commercial social networks have a real lock on your content. Theoretically, you COULD convince your friends to move along with you -- thus bringing your personal network and content to another social network. However, Michelle, your attitude is to not join yet another social network. I hate to tell you this but commercial social networking entrepreneurs LOVE your attitude. It means lock-in that they don't have to build. The more curmudgeonly social networking users get, the less likely they are to adopt new social networks.
